The Jews were not allowed to work on Saturdays. Allah tested a seaside town by forbidding them from fishing on the Sabbath. On Saturdays the fish would come very openly and abundantly while on other days they would not appear like that.  Some of the people eventually tried to circumvent the prohibition. It is said they used devices such as pools, channels, or traps so that the fish were held on the Sabbath and then taken afterward. Outwardly they could claim they had not “fished” on Saturday, but in reality the scheme was designed to obtain the Sabbath fish.  The people then fell into three groups according to the common tafsīr explanation: 1. The Sabbath-breakers.  They used the trick and continued despite being warned. Allah subjected them to severe punishment and ultimately said that they should become despised apes. This group was destroyed/punished. This shows how you cannot trick Allah or try to find loop holes in religion. 2. Those who actively warned them. They kept telling the sinners to stop. . The Qur’an explicitly says that Allah saved those who forbade the evil. 3.The group who said, “Why do you keep warning them?” They did not themselves participate in the fishing. Their final fate is not explicitly stated in the Qur’an. Some scholars say they were spared punishment while other scholars say they were punished.
