@teresondupuy: What if you stopped seeing the avoidant as the monster in your story and started seeing them as emotionally disabled? Not as an insult. Not as a clinical diagnosis. As a way of understanding that some people are functioning with very limited emotional capacity. They may not be able to stay present with difficult feelings. They may repress instead of process. They may struggle to communicate honestly. They may not know how to set boundaries, honor boundaries, repair conflict, tolerate vulnerability, or sustain intimacy. They may say beautiful things in the moment because they want to believe them too. The excitement feels real. The dopamine feels real. The fantasy feels real. But wanting love and having the emotional capacity to sustain love are two very different things. And if someone refuses to develop that capacity, then yes, they may remain profoundly impaired in relationships. Seeing that can change the story. Instead of: “They were evil.” Or: “I was not enough.” You may be able to say: “They were emotionally limited in ways that deeply hurt me.” That does not excuse betrayal. It does not remove accountability. It does not mean you stay. But it can create compassion. And compassion can help loosen the hatred, resentment, and obsession that keep you emotionally tied to them. You can understand someone’s limitations and still say: I cannot build a healthy life with someone who refuses to heal them. That is compassion without self-abandonment. #AvoidantAttachment #AttachmentStyle #Heartbreak #HealingJourney #InnerWork

I don't accept that at all. Their childhood past was not their fault but as an adult they are absolutely responsible for healing their past trauma so that they don't bleed on people who didn't cut them

@Artbyjenette: Yes but a person in a wheelchair is not going to destroy you. I have compassion but there needs to be a line.

They are mean to us. it’s deeper than poor . I do think they know when they are hurting people.

To be truly disabled, you have to have no choice about your situation. I would agree that it is extremely painful and difficult to travel that journey. But the choice has always been there. I agree with you. Also that compassion is the only choice we should make towards these people. But I also think it’s really important to call it out for what it is… Self-centeredness. anytime we choose to not address something that we know is hurting others IS a choice. So I think it’s possible to have compassion while expecting them to do better. We need to start making it a bit less comfortable to choose to hurt others. I spent 5 yrs with someone with BPD. He could control it when it served him. It’s unchecked EGO.

I saw this in the first month of dating her and I understood it completely. I knew there was a little girl inside there that was heart, and I saw that there was a lot of times she had no idea what she was doing and how much it was hurting people around her just really no concept of it. I was patient and gave her unconditional love for three years.

I saw her straight away so I distanced her before getting intimate, no contact for 2 months and I'm free and healed, and from this point I'm in control, not her not my emotions, so I can decide about my own life as a priority not in the basis of pitying her,

That’s a great outlook I had to understand from my fearful, avoidant ex. I had practice being patient and compassionate of her trauma, but they’re unwilling to meet you halfway. He had to release them with love and learn to walk away.
