Anzick. A little boy buried with such love and care, only to be held in cold labs and shelves for so long. I cried writing a paper in college over him, I just had this sense of overwhelming loss and a need to hold that little baby in my arms. Found out a couple years later after my dad got a DNA test that, like most Native Americans, I'm related to him.

the siberian ice maiden… i survived cancer at 19 and she was around 25 when she died from complications of the same disease i had. she used herbal remedies to manage her pain much like i did. she wore blue eyeliner, much like me. time wrinkles when i think of her and she’s like an old friend.

that one copper seller who was so terrible he inspired multiple ppl to carve incredibly detailed bad reviews on clay tablets. which he did then keep a collection of. we learned lots about the ancient Babylonian language from them, and we would’ve never known if not for an infamously bad merchant who seemingly took pride in pissing ppl off. classic human.

The boathouses at Herculaneum. 300 mostly women, children and babies trying so hard to survive and trying what any of us would have tried — getting to a sheltered area and trying to escape by boat. There are two theories on how they died, and I pray it was the fast one.

I think about the stolen Caryatid sister that stands alone in the British museum while her sisters wait for her back in Athens saving an open space for her for the day she's allowed to return. As a pagan, it resonates with me so much and makes my heart hurt for them.

One of the temple ruins that I saw in the Yucatán peninsula area had impressions on the walls from people with deformities (ex: missing arm, extra finger, etc.) where they were celebrated rather than cast aside of mocked. Not sure if that counts but it really moved me when I saw it.

The young girl found on the mountain top in South America where it's always cold. Forced to walk for miles with pneumonia, climb too the top of the mountain by chewing coca leaves. Then sacrificed and left there entombed by rocks and cold.

At the coliseum in Rome, there is a step with a small chunk missing. Next to that step on the wall it’s worn smooth with a small divot where people for millennia have used the wall to steady themselves on that broken step. I found it totally by accident when I was there in 2018, and I cried like a baby.

Call me basic if you like, but the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut has always been one of my favorites. One of the most grand temples ever built, and done for the first woman to actually hold the title of Pharaoh. A woman who worked so hard to build her kingdom into the empire she dreamed it could be, her stepson tried to erase her from memory after her death and steal her successes, but how can you erase a woman like her?

It sounds like surface level knowledge but Pompeii. The evidence of lovers, friends, and family members shielding their loved ones from the wreckage. Thousands of lives gone in an instant and buried under ash and soot preserved beneath the rubble of their home until we unearthed them. Bread still preserved enough to see the stamps on them. I ache thinking about the people who couldn't make it out in time

Matches :
One of the temples in Herculaneum, where an individual was found by the altar. They chose to stay behind, praying for the gods to save them instead of fleeing with the others. Saw it in person and it really stuck with me
