The ones sit in opposite corners of the plane, and no straight line can separate them. The best a single neuron manages is 3 of 4, and you can watch it try. Two hidden neurons each draw a line. A third neuron reads their two answers instead of the inputs. Then the error travels backwards through the network, and every one of the nine weights gets its share of the blame. That is backpropagation, in sixteen lines of Python. Run for real, not animated: 2 of 4 correct at the start, a hundred passes where nothing seems to happen, 4 of 4 from pass 386 on. The two lines end up as parallel diagonals with the answer in between. Part 3 of Machine Learning from Scratch. Part 1 was a line, part 2 was one neuron.
