@featherclose: Hummingbirds can do something most birds simply cannot. They can fly forward, backward, sideways, and even hover in one place with incredible control. The secret is in the way they move their wings. Instead of using the typical up and down wingbeats seen in most birds, hummingbirds rotate their wings through a figure eight motion. Their shoulder joints allow the wings to twist and change angle during each stroke, producing lift during both the forward and backward parts of the movement. That unique wing motion gives them remarkable control in the air. They can hover beside a flower while feeding, suddenly move backward, or change direction in a split second.
