@wild_whisper0: A caterpillar dissolves almost entirely inside its chrysalis. A 10-year-old from Kobe wanted to know what survives. His name is Jo Nagai, a student at Ibuki Higashi Elementary School in Kobe, Japan, and it started in his own garden. The swallowtails he had hand-raised from caterpillars did not fly off when he released them. They lingered, circled, and came back to him. Wild butterflies never did. So he asked the question every kid asks and almost no adult tries to answer: do they remember me? He found a 2008 study by Dr. Martha Weiss of Georgetown University showing that hornworm caterpillars could learn to avoid a smell and still avoid it after becoming moths. Jo wrote her a four-page letter. She wrote back and helped him shrink a lab experiment down to his bedroom. He raised Asian swallowtail caterpillars, Papilio xuthus, and paired the scent of lavender oil with a mild pulse from a household muscle therapy device. After they emerged as butterflies, he tested them in a Y-shaped tube, lavender on one side and nothing on the other. Roughly 7 in 10 chose the side without lavender. The memory had crossed the goo. Then he kept going. He bred the trained butterflies and tested their children, then their grandchildren, none of which had ever been trained. They avoided lavender too. Jo wrote a 33-page report, built an English-language poster by himself, and on August 28, 2024, presented it at the International Congress of Entomology in Kyoto. His poster title said it plainly: swallowtails remember what they learned as caterpillars, and the memories persist for three generations. In October 2025 he collected two more poster awards at a national conference in Japan, and this summer his story went viral worldwide. Scientists note that he has shown a behavior, not yet a mechanism, and that the work needs bigger samples and independent replication. That is the right way to treat it, and it is also why this is such a relatable moment: a kid, a question, a bottle of lavender, and the patience to wait through three generations of butterflies. Must-see visual storytelling about where science actually begins.
