This recurring association of members of the same family with Ghana’s major World Cup-related affairs inevitably raises serious questions about accountability, transparency, and public confidence. The Brazil 2014 World Cup administration was surrounded by serious financial and procurement controversies. The Dzamefe Commission identified questionable expenditure and recommended refunds, including amounts involving Elvis Afriyie Ankrah. Today, we are confronted with another disturbing allegation involving his younger brother, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who is currently the Director-General of the National Sports Authority. A petition reportedly filed with the CID alleges that approximately US$623,000 was collected from Ghanaians seeking assistance to travel to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with promises relating to visa facilitation. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has denied knowledge of the alleged arrangement, while the NSA has categorically denied authorising the collection of money or the facilitation of World Cup visas. The matter is reportedly subject to police investigation. These allegations must, therefore, be thoroughly investigated, and anyone found culpable should be held accountable according to the law. At the same time, allegations should not be treated as proven facts until the appropriate investigation establishes the truth. But the bigger question remains: Why does the same family keep finding itself so close to major World Cup-related affairs whenever serious controversies emerge? Ghanaian football and sports administration require transparency, professionalism, accountability, and public trust. World Cup opportunities must never become avenues for private enrichment, exploitation, or the abuse of public confidence. Our football belongs to Ghana, not to any individual, family, or private interest. 🇬🇭⚽
