In the center of this world stood the Parthian Empire, one of the most important Iranian powers and Rome’s greatest rival in the east. The Parthians controlled much of Iran, Mesopotamia, and large parts of Central Asia and were especially famous for their powerful cavalry, mounted archers, and heavily armored horsemen. The rivalry and wars between Rome and Parthia over Armenia, Mesopotamia, and their frontier territories became one of the longest-lasting geopolitical struggles of the ancient world. In the east, the Han Empire was one of the largest and wealthiest states of its time. The Han ruled most of China and possessed a huge population, extensive agriculture, major cities, an organized bureaucracy, and a powerful military. They expanded their influence toward Central Asia, while trade and diplomatic connections between China and the western regions grew significantly during the Han period, contributing to the development of the network later known as the Silk Road.
