@beyondpainsa: There is a particular kind of fear that comes with being a woman in South Africa. The kind that makes us look around when we get into our cars, share our locations without being asked, call someone while walking, think twice about going for a run, and feel relieved when the woman we love finally says, “I’m home.” We might never have known these women, but they are us and we are them. They had lives, families, people who loved them, and places they were supposed to be. And now, as more bodies are found, that fear becomes heavier. We are not only grieving women we never knew, we are confronting the reality that this could happen to any one of us, or someone we love. We are tired of having to teach our daughters how to survive the world instead of being able to promise them that the world will keep them safe. We are tired of condolences after the fact. We are tired of having to make ourselves smaller, quieter and more cautious just to make it home. We do not want to live in a country where fear becomes something women are expected to simply accept. We want to live somewhere our bodies are not a risk simply because we are women. Somewhere going home is ordinary. Somewhere safety is not a privilege. Somewhere our daughters inherit freedom, not instructions for survival. Until then, we keep speaking, we keep looking out for one another, and we refuse to normalise this. 💜 Beyond Pain SA.
