How to have a conversation about body odour sensitively👇 Raising a personal hygiene issue is a sensitive conversation. But sometimes it’s necessary, especially if people have complained to you, it’s affecting client-facing work or you’re concerned about the person as this is a new occurrence. There are many reasons someone might smell of body odour, for example medical issues, hormonal changes, menopause, religious practices, stress or they simply may not realise. Here’s a respectful 4-step structure to approach this kind of conversation: 1️⃣ Ask for permission. Let them know you need to raise something sensitive and check if now is a good time 2️⃣ Share your intention. Make it clear you’re coming from a place of care, not criticism 3️⃣ Raise the issue kindly. This could sound like: “I’ve noticed sometimes you’ve been smelling of body odour recently, I know there can be all sorts of reasons behind this, so first and foremost I wanted to check if you’re ok?” Avoid saying that others have raised it, as this can feel shaming and isolating. 4️⃣ Offer support. They may not need it, but you can judge this depending on how they respond. Often this is all that needs to be said. 💬 Have you ever been on either side of this conversation? Share your experiences in the comments. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore, please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. ➕ Follow for more strategies on navigating tricky work dynamics #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #emotionalintelligence #corporatelife #difficultsituations #difficultconversations #communicationskills #managingpeople
