@elorm_alek: It was sculpted and cast four thousand miles away, in England. In June 1968, the NLC commissioned Sir Charles Wheeler one of Britain's most prominent sculptors to build it. There was one problem: Kotoka was already dead. So that September, Wheeler flew to Ghana just to meet the general's relatives and sketch their family likenesses, working from photographs and the faces of the people Kotoka left behind to reconstruct a man he never met. He built a clay model first, a twenty-fourth the size of the real thing. Then came the full bronze cast, eight and a half feet tall, roughly a ton of metal, finished and polished in a studio in South Kensington, London, before being shipped out to Ghana that December. Here's the detail worth sitting with, Reuters reported at the time that it would be unveiled 'next February.' It wasn't. The actual unveiling didn't happen until April 17th, 1970, the exact third anniversary of the day Kotoka was assassinated. That gap wasn't an accident. Someone deliberately held the ceremony back two extra months just to land it on the anniversary of his death. So the monument to the man who helped overthrow Ghana's most famous anti-colonial leader, was designed, sculpted, and cast in the old colonial capital itself, before it ever touched Ghanaian soil.
