That’s the reason why BMW inline engines are slanted. So the intake manifold faces higher to be serviced from up top, and then the exhaust manifold is slanted towards the bottom so it can be easier serviced from the bottom.

BMW dashes are tech-friendly, but their engine bays aren’t. Plus, fuses. Why the heck are half the fuses integrated into a non-serviceable box? I can’t stand stuff like that.

A car that’s difficult to work on: Mazda’s new large RWD-platform vehicles. Look at where the engines are positioned. Basically slam against the firewall. The rear 2 spark plugs on both the I4 PHEV and I6 are impossible to get to. The I6 is the worst because it has a turbo charge air pipe that goes over top of the engine to the intercooler. It has to be removed. Then you have remove two layers of plastic cowl panels below the windshield (wiper arms have to come off for that). If you are lucky and have several extensions and swivel sockets and small hands, you may be able to get your tools between the cowl and head (which only has about 6” of clearance) to remove the coils and plugs. They stick the 12V battery so far back it is under the cowl panel against the firewall. Again, the left side of the cowl panel has to be removed to get the battery out. Tons of clips and plastic rivets hold it in place. Then there’s this big plastic contraption on top of the battery with all of these connectors that has to be undone and shoved aside. Once you’ve done that you can get the battery out. The timing chain is on the rear of the engine (like the B58). The engine sits so far back against the firewall it is an engine-out job. Engine out requires dropping the front axle, front suspension, and 8-speed transmission. It’s all got to be removed as one piece. Mazda should know better. Their 3.3T I6 engine is very efficient, but good god it is poorly packaged with no thought about techs performing maintenance or the consumer paying for labor. The 12V battery should be under the rear seat or in the side of the trunk. The intercooler is UNDER the intake manifold. Despite all the German-like engineering, they didn’t bother to make oil changes easy by putting the filter up top, nor did they include a drain tube for the oil to be suctioned out. Say what you will about Jaguar Land Rover, but their 5.0L V8 and 3.0L Supercharged V6 were designed for easy oil changes (ie. they did put a suction tube in the oil fill port that went to bottom of oil pan, and filter was up top). I could do an oil change in 10 mins on my old V8 LR4.

audi/vw just own a nuts and bolts factory or something because why do they install at least 3 different type of bolts per panel damn near have to use average single socket variety there is every time I work on an audi 😂

Vag group messed up due to their silly idea of silicone bags extending the lifetime of their coolant ( clearly didn’t ) here in the UK we’ve done a load lol, with my mates Passat heater matrix blocking up because the bag had popped in the coolant

Watches my buddy do a Kia forte, he had dash out and back in within a few hours because the dash comes out as one piece and goes in as one. There’s no layers. It’s all one solid piece. That’s what an easy dash should be
