@modern_floki: Herbal tea When it comes to a visually stunning herbal tea with an incredibly mild flavor, butterfly pea flower might be one of the easiest herbs to add to almost anything. Today I tasted butterfly pea flower completely on its own—and honestly, I couldn’t pick out a distinct flavor or strong tasting note at all. Butterfly pea flower herbal tea, made from Clitoria ternatea, produces that famous deep blue color from naturally occurring anthocyanin pigments. Add something acidic like lemon and watch that blue transform toward purple or pink as the pH changes. Traditionally used throughout Southeast Asia, butterfly pea flower has become especially interesting for its antioxidant-rich plant compounds. Research has explored its anthocyanins and other compounds for antioxidant activity, inflammation, metabolic health, cognitive function, and cellular protection, although human research is still developing and it shouldn’t be treated as a cure. But the flavor—or lack of one—is actually what impressed me. I didn’t get floral. I didn’t get bitter. I didn’t get sweet. I really didn’t get much of anything distinct. That means butterfly pea flower herbal tea basically becomes whatever you make it. Add honey? You taste the honey. Add lemon? Bright, citrusy tea. Blend it with other herbs? It gives you that gorgeous color without fighting everything else in the cup. And that earns it something I haven’t given yet: 10/10 — the first 10/10 of the tasting series. Not because it has some incredible flavor, but because it doesn’t need one. Beautiful color, interesting plant compounds, tremendous versatility, and a neutral enough profile to build almost any herbal tea around. Butterfly pea flower understood the assignment. #herbaltea #modern_floki #herbalmedicine #herbalremedies #herbal
