elvis' manager wanted half of the publishing rights to her song, elvis wanted to sing it only. she said no cause she wanted all copyrights and royalties to belong to her and her family, even though she cried cause she really wanted him to sing it she still said no which was smart if you ask me

Perfect rendition of what Elvis would have probably done, as a bit of an homage to the classic era. But Dolly 100% made the right choice. Whitney fucking killed it, and was allowed to do so because of the era it was produced in.

it was the colonel that wanted and reasonable amounts of money and the entirety of the royalties for that song that Dolly wrote Elvis still wanted to do it but he didn't want to do it on those terms that's why he never did it.
