That's what happened to Sam Jaffe in July 2011 while swimming roughly 4 miles (6.4 km) off Key West, Florida. With nothing but open water surrounding him, several sharks approached and began investigating. Despite how terrifying the situation looked, the sharks never attacked. They remained relatively calm, circling and observing before eventually moving away. The encounter became a striking example of how sharks often investigate unfamiliar animals and objects without immediately becoming aggressive. But when you're completely exposed, miles from shore, knowing that doesn't make the sight of sharks beneath you any less unsettling. The footage later became one of You Tube's most memorable open-ocean shark encounters - capturing what it feels like when you realize you're not actually alone out there.
