i feel like it’s okay to want a cuddly cat 😭 if it’s a deal breaker that a cat isn’t cuddly… just recommend one of your fosters that IS cuddly. it’s not that serious. they aren’t trying to disrespect a cat’s bodily autonomy. they just enjoy kitty cuddles and need a kitty who feels the same!

For scratching what I’ve found works the best is: keeping up with nail trims, having an assortment of scratching posts/mats around, keeping a clear cover on couch/cousins or just keeping them covered, clapping/saying their name/redirecting to disrupt the behavior when I notice it, and mostly just giving up and accepting it bc it’s their home and scratching is natural for cats.

I think it's interesting you are mentioning you want the adopters to have specific reasons for adopting the cat but also think that wanting a cat who is cuddly is a deal breaker. I would argue that "cuddliness," in a cat is often directly tied to their personality. Cats definitely are not an accessory and should be treated with care and respect, but people also view cats who are able to be held and malleable as really important things for various reasons, not just for their own comfort. For instance, I would want to adopt from a foster parent who hopefully does their best with desensitization because these can be extremely important things for washing cats, taking them to the vet, getting their nails trimmed, etc. In my experience, cuddlier cats often do better with these things. (I've fostered one or two who broke that mold obviously.) My cuddliest foster would jump into the shower with me when he wanted a bath. He was also a rescue and needed insulin and also did veryyy well with me administering medicine. Obviously those things aren't guaranteed with a cuddly cat but in my experience it DOES make things easier & I could understand why someone wouldn't want a cat spooked from being held, touched, etc. Personality and livability are verryyy important aspects of adopting. Cats show different forms of love than physical touch of course but there are other reasons to want that in a cat than feeling a need to touch their body; sometimes it's medically significant.

Oh no wonder I’ve never had a problem adopting 😂 I’ve had cats my whole life. You asked what would be a deal breaker and I literally thought for so long and could only come up with issues that normally stem from something the owner is doing wrong so I don’t think I have any deal breakers lmfao

My 10 year old cat decided last year that he is okay with cuddling. It was a long wait lol but worth it. He is now almost an annoying cuddler. 😂😂😂

I tried spraying water once. My girl looked me dead in the eye and opened her mouth wanting me to spray it for her to drink. It became a game for us until I got rid of the water toy.

What would you advise to do other than a spray bottle? Not that I use them, but my orange boy has been LOVING the kitchen counters lately especially while I’m trying to cook. He’s only a year old so I’m trying to break the habit early but I don’t know what would be effective that doesn’t make him scared of me.

i agree with all of these except for the cigarette smoking and wanting a cuddly cat. it’s not up to you to dictate whether or not a pet parent smokes cigarettes & also there’s nothing wrong with wanting a cat who cuddles. saying they want a cuddly cat doesn’t mean they plan on taking their autonomy, they’d just prefer to have a cat who would willingly want to cuddle.

Obviously being not cuddly does not necessarily equate that they don’t bring you comfort but you saying you shouldn’t get a cat for comfort is weird. Like most people want pets because they bring them some form of comfort and want to nurture them.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting a cuddly cat. I’m sure you have your reasons and that there’s a certain type of adopter you’re trying to avoid. But imo just because someone wants a cuddly cat doesn’t mean they don’t want to give the cat autonomy. If anything they’re searching for a cat who enjoys cuddling for a reason. I love cuddly velcro type dogs, so I looked for a dog that matched that. I don’t personally like shibas temperaments for example. There’s nothing wrong with looking for an animal that matches what you’re looking for ! I know i want my second dog to be more aloof then my current dog, there’s nothing wrong w wanting that either ! at least i don’t think so
