When Adonis is having a hard time, my first priority is keeping him safe and figuring out what he needs. 💙 That isn’t always easy. He can’t always tell me through spoken words what hurts, what feels overwhelming, or what has changed. I’m trying to understand while also helping him through the moment. Sometimes I figure it out. Sometimes I’m still searching. We have his AAC device, headphones, sensory tools, and familiar supports. But having those things doesn’t mean every difficult moment has a quick solution. Some days are still incredibly hard. I’ve cried. I’ve been exhausted. I’ve felt overwhelmed while trying to help my little boy feel less overwhelmed. I love him beyond words, and I’m human, too. What I want for him in those moments is patience. Time. Support that respects him. I want the people around him to remember that he is a child experiencing something difficult, even when they don’t understand what they’re seeing. And I want to remember that myself when I’m tired and struggling. I don’t have to understand everything immediately to stay focused on his safety and keep trying to help. Adonis deserves love and dignity in the hard moments just as much as he does when he’s smiling, playing, and reaching a milestone. To the parent working through a difficult day alongside their child: I see you. Your effort matters, even when the day doesn’t end with an easy answer. You deserve patience and support, too. 💙💗 —The Ridgeway’s Journey #fyp #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #support
