The House unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday to hold billionaire Leon Black in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with subpoenas issued as part of its investigation of Jeffrey Epstein. The process moved quickly, with the House Oversight Committee voting 41–0 on Tuesday to refer the matter to the full House, which approved the resolution by unanimous consent Wednesday afternoon. The resolution refers Mr. Black to the Justice Department for possible criminal prosecution, though the department is under no obligation to act. The contempt action stems from Mr. Black’s failure to appear for a Sept. 3 deposition before the Oversight Committee and to fully comply with a separate subpoena seeking nondisclosure agreements to which he was a party. “No one is above the law,” the committee’s chair, Rep. James Comer (R-KY), said in a statement. “We will continue to seek transparency for the American people and justice for survivors in our investigation of the federal government’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell criminal cases.” Attorneys for Mr. Black, the former CEO of Apollo Global Management, slammed the House’s move, calling it “an outrageous action that ignores the facts and the truth about Mr. Black.” “The House of Representatives has rushed through every stage of this inquiry. First, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and Chairman Comer rushed to issue him subpoenas,” they said in a statement. “Then, the Committee rushed to hold him in contempt, even in the face of active litigation and an ethics complaint.
