This is Lewis Powell, photographed by Alexander Gardner in April 1865 aboard a Union ironclad warship. Most Civil War–era portraits are stiff and blurry, but Powell’s modern knit sweater, casual posture, and piercing stare give viewers an uncanny sense of a "time traveler." In reality, he was a key conspirator recruited by John Wilkes Booth. On the exact night Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theatre, Powell broke into the home of Secretary of State William Seward and carried out a brutal knife attack. Less than three months after this photograph was taken, he was hanged at Fort McNair at just 21 years old.
