I’m still trying to find the words for how moved I was by We Can’t Be Friends. At the heart of it is Azhar, a man who has built his life around certainty. His faith, his future, his sense of duty, and the life he believes he is meant to lead. He is training to be a teacher, preparing for a future of stability, marriage, respectability, and a life lived in accordance with what he has always been taught to believe. Then he meets Rahim. Rahim, who is openly gay and estranged from his family, has already experienced the devastating cost of living outside the expectations placed upon him. What begins as Azhar believing he can help, guide, or somehow bring Rahim back to the path he thinks he has lost, slowly becomes something far more complicated, intimate, and human. And that is where this show becomes so incredibly powerful. Because it refuses to offer easy answers. It asks what happens when faith and desire are no longer things you can neatly separate. What happens when the person you are taught to save becomes the person who makes you question everything you thought you knew about yourself? What does it cost to live truthfully when the world around you has already decided who you are allowed to be? This is why I love theatre.Because theatre can open up the conversations we often find too difficult to have elsewhere. It can place us inside experiences that may not be our own and ask us to listen, really listen, without immediately reaching for judgement or certainty. It creates room for contradiction, discomfort, empathy, and understanding. We Can’t Be Friends is not simply a story about faith and queerness. It is a story about identity, expectation, love, shame, belonging, and the impossible choices people are sometimes forced to make when the truth of who they are conflicts with the life they have been promised. And for brown and Black queer audiences, particularly those whose experiences sit at the intersection of faith, culture, family, and sexuality, the importance of seeing stories like this cannot be overstated. There is something deeply moving about seeing these conversations take centre stage not as a debate, not as a stereotype, but as lived, complicated, deeply human experience. I would tell everyone to go and see it, but it’s sold out and honestly, I hope that is only the beginning of what this show becomes. Because work like this deserves to travel, to reach more people, to be talked about in foyers and classrooms and living rooms, and to keep opening doors for conversations that so many people have been denied the space to have. Theatre at its best doesn’t tell us what to think. It makes us feel something, question something, and perhaps understand someone a little more than we did before. This show did exactly that for me. And I’m so grateful for it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #review #queertheatre #wecantbefriends @Brixton House
🍓 Mini No-Bake Strawberry Cheesecakes 🍰 Chocolate isn’t my favorite so of course I had to do the classic version. And I’m not even being dramatic when I say I could eat these for every damn meal. Ingredients Crust • 2 cups graham crackers, crushed fine • 1 stick unsalted butter, melted No-Bake Cheesecake • 3 packs cream cheese, softened • 2 cups heavy cream • 3 tbsp honey • 1½ tbsp vanilla • pinch of salt Icing • 1 pack cream cheese, softened • ⅓ cup brown sugar • 1 tsp vanilla • 10 oz Cool Whip (soft) Fruit • 2 lbs fresh strawberries, diced Method 1. Mix crumbs + butter. Add 2 tbsp to each 5-oz cup (makes 24). Chill. 2. Whip cheesecake ingredients until fluffy. Pipe over crust (just over halfway). Chill. 3. Dice strawberries. 4. Whip icing ingredients. 5. Add 2 tbsp strawberries, icing, and a sprinkle of leftover crust. 6. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. I’m obsessed. Save this one. 🍓🤌🏻
