@eudebates_live: Let Putin Pay, Not Europeans - S&D Lays Out Its SOTEU 2026 Demands! Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament leader Iratxe Garcia Perez used the 2026 State of the Union debate to call for stronger action on climate, housing, workers’ rights, Ukraine, Gaza and Europe’s strategic independence. Welcoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to the European Parliament, García recalled the Canadians who died on European soil during the two world wars and argued that Europe needs allies committed to sovereignty, solidarity and international law. Her central challenge to Ursula von der Leyen was simple: turn words into action. Turning to foreign policy, García called for tougher action over Gaza and Israel, including an arms embargo, and urged Europe to revisit the confiscation of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. Her message on Russia was direct: “Let Putin pay, not European taxpayers.” #Socialists #SOTEU #SOTEU2026 #vonderLeyen #eudebates
