you had the bottom latch on the top and the top on the bottom. if you flip this the pins will be on the inside

Could’ve taken the screws out and moved the bottom latch to the top and the top to the bottom I’m sure that was your mistake

or you could have just installed the locks correctly. you got top on bottom and bottom on top. the lock should be inside the door frame and not outside the door frame, that way both doors open with other door closed

You could have easily ran a bracket going left to right for thebtop part and then moved that lock to where the hole is.
