Another issue in this regard is just how bloated the term AI has become. Way, wayyyy too many programs are referred to as AI. Some are morally bankrupt and terrible for the environment, and others are just computer programs that are really good at math and other benign yet tedious tasks. And unfortunately, it’s the morally corrupt AI that’s really being shoved in our faces rn, so if AI is mentioned at all in movies (even if it’s a piece of tech that doesn’t exist in our world), people’s immediate reaction will be an eye roll.

I hate real life AI but I LOVE fictional ai/robot characters. My take is that robots have existed in sci fi for so long that they have essentially became a fantasy species. I think artists should be able to still make robot characters today if they want to, seperate from real life ai.

People hear ai and think chat gpt and not the fictional concept of a sentient/sapient machine or any of the millions of other things ai could mean. In all honesty, sci-fi would probably benefit from a rebrand because the term "ai" has been co-opted by WAY to many different concepts and it's confusing for the majority of people to differentiate what ai could mean.

Extremely true but I think we’re witnessing a fantastic new genre of sci-fi through the contextualization of ai. Best recent example imo is Pluribus, where the entire show showcases the uncanny and bizarre affirmative nature that LLMs have through an actual human body. Really good if you haven’t seen and a great critique on ai among many other things
