This Meiji-period Japanese woodblock triptych print, titled Mitate Sanyu-shi (Three Brave Heroes), was created by Toyohara Kunichika in 1877. The piece functions as a theatrical, kabuki-inspired commentary on the contemporary events of the Satsuma Rebellion, a major samurai uprising against the Meiji government that took place the same year the artwork was published. It dramatically portrays three of the prominent rebel leaders under historical or theatrical guises: Saigo Takamori is positioned at the center wearing a Westernized military uniform with a feathered hat, flanked by Shinohara Kunimoto on the left and Kirino Toshiaki on the right.
