Very few movies find a way to fully capture a look inside the world they are hoping to portray and La Haine does that to a level almost never achieved to this level before, but how? Based in the rundown projects of outer Paris, the film is based on a look into a single day and night of three friends from a poor immigrant neighborhood trying to deal with the issue of police brutality and racism over one of their friends being put in a coma by the police during a riot. The film depicts their heartache as-well as their angst towards the system that has continued to fail them. The title itself comes from a line spoken by one of them in the film, Hubert:

The movie to me perfectly helps depict the power struggle we still deal with today and I find it especially important that it was based on the outskirts of Paris, a place that never gets much attention with the inner city being all that’s ever looked at. Dealing with the idea of power, and how growing up into a violent, oppressive relationship with governing authorities can shape the psyche. To be a cinematic masterpiece at the same time is the reason I think this film is a must watch for anyone who enjoys film. From being done over 25 years ago, completely done in French and in black and white to still finding a way to make you feel as if you could be a real part of it with them, is something I think is insanely hard to pull off and a big part of what makes this film so impactful. I want to talk more about the ideology of the whole thing but don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t gotten the amazing opportunity to watch it for the first time yet.
