I don't like the alternative. it takes up a lot of floor space, butting into the hallway. it looks so out of place. Perhaps if the hallway was 10-12' wide, maybe. That would be the first thing I would remove in my house.

Walking down those stairs is a nightmare. They all look the same, and blend in with the next step. You can’t get a good depth perspective.

There’s no way you can do that rounded last few steps with the construction of the wall right by it. The second staircase looks nice but I hate how it sticks so far into the hallway. That “grand” staircase look only looks best when there is space for it.

Kids or even adults are going to whip around that corner taking out those railings. I definitely wouldn't do either stairway without a hefty newel post.

I like the curved step at the bottom, but not in such a narrow hallway. It protrudes so far into the hallway that it's actually encroaching on the main walkway, where people walking down the hallway will naturally walk, creating a tripping hazard, especially in the dark. I guarantee people walking down that hallway, particularly when their aim isn't to use the stairs but instead to round the corner, will be tripping over that bottom curved step, maybe even falling, and banging their ankle on the side of it all the time.
