My Deaf great-grandfather signed and fingerspelled beautifully, clearly, gracefully. I never met my Deaf great-grandmother but Mom tells me she was a beautiful speller too. Fluent fingerspelling does not look like someone slowly spelling out every l-e-t-t-e-r. It’s every letter. It flows, it blends into one movement, a shape. Fluent fingerspellers turn letters into a sign. Like: bank, job, style. I understood my great-grandfather before I could even read. Fingerspelling “style” or “ice” like that is a mark of deep fluency. My grandparents also fingerspelled that way. Then my mom. Then me. And now my own children. If you filmed a real conversation between Deaf adults, you'd see fingerspelling. So why are some people uncomfortable with fingerspelling? Part of it is because some people start out with fingerspelling so it is seen as beginner level, English on the hands, if you will, until they get better at ASL and stop spelling so much. And history matters too. For generations, Deaf children were told there was a “right” way to communicate and often more English based systems over ASL. So some people have complicated feelings about anything connected to English. But the problem was never fingerspelling itself. The problem was taking away choice. My family never learned it was separate. It’s always been part of our language, for generations. I watched it in my great-grandfather’s hands.And I carry it and now I see it in my children’s, our ASL.”
