PETER OBI VS SOLUDO: THE FRESH ANAMBRA DEBT CONTROVERSY A fresh war of words has erupted between former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and the administration of Governor Charles Soludo over the financial liabilities allegedly left behind by previous administrations. The controversy started after the Soludo administration said Anambra State was still servicing loans inherited from previous governments, including loans obtained during Peter Obi’s administration. Peter Obi rejected the claim, insisting that when he left office in 2014, Anambra owed no salaries, pensions, gratuities, suppliers or contractors whose payments were due. Obi also said his administration cleared more than ₦35 billion in historical arrears. He challenged the Soludo administration to provide evidence of anyone his government owed, saying he would stop his 2027 presidential campaign if such evidence was established. Obi also defended his claim that he left more than ₦2.13 billion in an ecological fund for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis. However, the Soludo administration disputed that claim, saying government records did not support Obi’s description of the account or the amount he mentioned. The Anambra government has also released details of loans it says were outstanding from previous administrations, putting the outstanding balance at about ₦127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026. The controversy has now reopened the long-standing political disagreement between Peter Obi and Charles Soludo, with both sides presenting different accounts of Anambra’s finances and the legacy of previous administrations.
