It's survivorship bias: They only make true crime shows about the cases/incidents that had convoluted events or insane twists; The majority of cases are relatively straight-forward and boring.

I watched my mother’s mental state deteriorate rapidly from only watching true crime and trial footage 24/7. I’m talking news, true crime shows like the ID channel, and listening to murder mysteries at night. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, and it’s terrifying seeing that become normalized.
