@treatmyocd: If you’ve ever wondered what reassurance seeking as a compulsion can look like, this arc from ADULTS S1E2 is a pretty good example. In the episode, Samir (Sammy) hears a statistic that half of men don’t realize when they’ve crossed a line sexually. Even though he has no specific reason to believe he has, he immediately starts wondering: What if I’ve crossed a line and didn’t realize it? The doubt becomes so consuming that he meets with multiple exes to ask about their experiences with him, looking for reassurance that he hasn’t done something wrong. Samir is not said to have OCD in the show, and we’re not suggesting that he does. But this pattern can look very familiar to people with OCD: a doubt seemingly comes out of nowhere, creates an urgent need to know for sure, and leads to reassurance seeking to try to get relief. That reassurance may help temporarily, but with OCD, the relief usually doesn’t last. The doubt can return, leading to the urge to ask again, check in another way, or find more proof. Representation of OCD doesn’t always come from characters explicitly written as having OCD. Sometimes a scene like this can still help put a hard-to-explain compulsion into context, especially for people who may not realize just how far someone with OCD can go to try to feel certain. #ocd #adults #ocdawareness #intrusivethoughts #ocdproblems
