A horrible accident or terrible negligence? On December 6, 2025, Thomas Plamberger and his girlfriend, Kerstin Gurtner climbed the summit of Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner. However, things took a dark turn as Gurtner lost the strength to continue climbing. After four hours, Plamberger decided to descend to the nearest mountain hut and seek help. By the time he returned six and a half hours later, Gurtner had frozen to death. Innsbruck police have arrested Plamberger on charges of manslaughter through negligence, arguing that he had planned the tour recklessly and made multiple mistakes that led to her death. Prosecutors alleged that Plamberger had prepared inadequately for the trip, carrying insufficient emergency equipment for bivouacking — to set up a temporary camp on the move — and instructing Gurtner to take only soft boots designed for snowboarding, not mountain climbing. Prosecutors also argued that since the wind chill produced a “feels-like” temperature of minus 20C, Plamberger should have known to turn back halfway through the ascent. He also allegedly failed to alert the emergency services as nightfall came and failed to move Gurtner to a nook where she would be sheltered from the wind.
