Wow I handled claims for 30 years and am unfamiliar with this, but I get it given the # of accidents taking place with unlisted drivers. May I ask what state this policy was written in?

Is that only in your state or certain states? I haven’t done insurance in years but used to be licensed and worked in Florida and I don’t recall this at all. I wonder if it’s that way in Georgia.

You scared me so I called my insurer who said my policy doesn't step down for permissive use. Surprisingly, they also said that permissive use also applies to someone who lives with me as long as they have their own car and their own insurance. They don't need to be on my policy unless their use of my car is frequent. It feels like all these policies are different.

Insurance companies write policies after assessing risk. How can risk be assessed if the driver is unknown ?

So if I loan my car for somebody to run to the store for me while I’m cooking and they get in a fender bender that’s not covered?? I thought if you loaned your car, it was covered automatically unless that person was driving the car quite a bit.

My sister in law needed a car to go to daily radiation appts for a month so I let her use mine since I wfh. My agent actually recommended me to add her on to my policy while she had the car and then when she was done ,I took her off. He said that would make the easiest since if there was an accident it would definitely be covered since she was on the policy. It was only $30 more to add her and worth it for my peace of mind.

The answer to about 90% of the questions in this comment section is: talk to your agent.

this is fascinating to me. as someone who worked in UK motor insurance this can literally never happen because you insure the specific operator of the vehicle for the vehicle. So you have to add a "named driver" to your policy anytime you loan the vehicle out OR the person loaning the vehicle has to insure the vehicle themselves separately to the owners insurance (usually on a short term policy for however long they will be the operator of the vehicle but this is only an option if the owner and any other named drivers on the owners policy are not ever operating the vehicle as you can't be double insured.)

Is this a state thing? Curious because I am an adjuster as well.

Is there a "step up" possibility in the future for that person, or is it set indefinitely?

I thought step down policies were only offered by non-standard carriers. but I'm guessing this one isn't non-standard.

Thank you Ash. I spent time to look at my policy and need to spend more time to see if this applies to my coverage. Appreciate you and what information you provide!

What happens if you let someone drive your car, but they have their own car with insurance? Would theirinsurance be secondary?

but if the driver has the same level of insurance coverage, would the drivers insurance cover the damage? like I barrow my mom's car from time to time. I have full coverage plus extras and so does she.
