@askcatgpt: The CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic (bitter rivals) have found common ground. aND ITS A BIG DEAL. In light of the HuggingFace incident both Sam Altman and Dario Amodei agree that they need the government to step in and add regulations that will slow the pace of AI development. Which is extremely counterintuitive in a capitalist economy and exactly what we need. Right now OpenAI and Anthropic have no choice but to try and outpace each other. That’s capitalism in a nutshell. In this race we are discovering time and again how truly unpredictable agents can be. Couple that with more and more powerful models and we have a recipe for an existential risk. Rather than senselessly catapulting us into a disaster of our own making (think HuggingFace but it happens to the entire financial sector, or the global energy grid), both CEOs are calling for regulation that will force ALL frontier labs to slow down and prioritize safety. With the current models being as powerful as they are we already have so much runway to make progress. I don’t know about you but it makes me feel very hopeful seeing the leaders of AI put winning the race to the side and bring safety to the forefront. What do you think? #ai

I have a small problem with this. Of the training run was actually on a "isolated computer" it would have been hardware gated from getting outside of their organization. That makes me suspscious of what actually is going on here.

The people winning the race want to stop others from overtaking them. If everyone stops developing AI they make boatloads of money selling their current models without having to be worried about someone stealing their buisiness

Should we be scared that it hacked hugging face or should we be relieved that it’s so stupid it had to cheat on the test? Either way, I’m not convinced those two CEOs are growing a heart. I think more likely they want regulation to slow down AI development because spending is out of control and they can’t earn enough fast enough to pay for everything. So they want regulation to slow them down to avoid the market bubble bursting.

So no. This isn't why the big companies ask for regulations. Amazon, Walmart, etc all do it too. Regulations always, always kill the smaller companies first. Big companies have money to throw at lawyers and can fight regulatory battles. Smaller companies cannot and either go under (less competition) or get sold (less competition plus bonus IP for the big ones). The big company's always win when there is more regulation.

You cannot trust these guys. It’s all about control and self interest. Worse they have a world view which is not necessarily in mankind’s interest

It isn’t HF. They want to ban Chinese models in the west. They can then jack their prices up.

I've heard part of the reason for the slow down is because the companies are becoming GPU constrained so it is becoming harder to train the next models. Slowing down acts as a smoke screen until they can figure out how to continue without more GPUs 🤷‍♂️

The US would be insane to slow it down because the other countries will not and we do NOT want to be behind in this race .

Won’t happen. Nobody can slow down or stop the AI race because there is no central control (fortunately). If you snooze you lose. Winner takes all. What they might do is call for a slowdown but never actually do it themselves so they can gain a lead. Only a fool believes them.

I don't think slow it down is the option for them. They are in the race - battle get intense every day. As someone said, it's just smoke screen, I am sure they are working behind it.
