The day saw appearances from some of the most famous figures on the American right, but few moments gained as much attention as the speech by Representative Brandon Gill. The Texas Representative started his speech in an unlikely fashion: with a land acknowledgement. In year’s past, land acknowledgments have been a topic on the left, who has made it a ritual to start any speech or lecture with a “tribute” to the American Indians who previously occupied the land. In this case, Rep. Hill flipped the concept on its head, poking fun at the strange tradition while paying tribute to the millions of Americans who came before us, and who turned this continent of untamed wilderness into one of the greatest countries in the world.
