@valleipraktijk: When I took the train from Yamagata to Yamagata to Yamadera, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. My host at Mintaro Hut in Yamagata insisted I go, and it certainly did not disappoint. Despite the heat, I was eager to see what lay at the top of those 1,015 steps. The mountain is remarkably serene. It’s easy to see how Bashō found the inspiration here for one of the most famous haikus in Japanese literary history.
