@haunted_attractions: UPDATE on a story we posted last week. Darkness Rising, a Long Island haunted house that's run for nearly 20 years, canceled its 2026 season just weeks before opening, and owner Kevin Baird launched a GoFundMe to recover his costs. The Town of Babylon's Department of Public Safety has now confirmed to us in a written statement that the building where the haunt was set up was not approved for use as a haunted attraction. Its certificate of occupancy is an old one for light industrial use that "does not reflect current occupancy change of use." On September 2, the town determined there could be "no occupancy for change of use without town planning and zoning approval." No permit applications or inspection requests were filed for a haunted-attraction or assembly use at the address in 2026. Town officials met with the owner or tenant on September 3 and are awaiting their paperwork. Baird, who says he discovered the building issue too late to fix it, is raising money to cover what he spent. His GoFundMe is still open and 17% funded as of this writing. #longisland #newyork #halloween
