Detailed blog on keeping chickens and ducks on my website mymulberryhouse.com Runner ducks are known for their upright, almost penguin-like posture, which makes them look as if they’re standing tall and walking on tiptoes. Their bodies are more vertical than those of other ducks, giving them a quirky, endearing look. Runner ducks are exceptional layers and can produce 150–300 eggs annually, depending on the line and conditions. ( we may have a dodgy line, ours haven’t laid a single egg yet) These ducks are natural foragers, adept at finding insects, snails, slugs etc. They have a strong instinct to search for food, which means they can help reduce pest populations in gardens without damaging plants (unlike chickens, which scratch and can disturb roots) Runner ducks are one of the most active duck breeds, always on the move and exploring. While they aren’t necessarily known for being cuddly, they’re social animals that tend to stick together in groups.... as you can see. Runner ducks are generally quieter than other duck breeds and can be a good option if you have neighbours or don’t want the constant noise of louder poultry. They don’t necessarily need a pond, they’re happy foraging and waddling around but if you provide them with a small space to preen and wash they’ll thank you for it. A paddling pool or a galvanised bath work well. Buy runner ducks responsibly. Hobby keepers are usually the best source. Don’t get one duck, they’re social animals and Runner breeders tend to keep the birds in small groups (pairs, trios) but make sure the ratio of Drakes to females is not too high. They’re quite frankly, very silly so they’re rather amusing to watch. They career around the garden looking only at eye level and so they’re constantly stumbling down a ditch or step. We keep our runners tucked up at night with our chickens in a hut that it raised off the ground to help prevent predator attacks. Any more questions, let me know in the comments.
