During the 1960s, Davis and his wife, LaDonna, took in a young chimpanzee named Moe, whom they claimed to have rescued from poachers in Tanzania. After approximately six months in the hospital, he was eventually released. The incident exposed the serious dangers of keeping chimpanzees in captivity as pets and raised questions about the security and management of private animal facilities.
