COMMENTARY | When Those Who Crumble Under Pressure Rise To The Top Today, at 9am, Ismail Sabri was supposed to be charged at the Sessions Court for corruption. But before he could be charged, do you know what Ismail did? He admitted himself to IJN — just hours before he was supposed to appear in court. And this is not the first time Ismail has done this. Last year, when he was being investigated by the MACC for corruption, our friend also reportedly fell unconscious at his home before the authorities could arrest him, after several of his aides had been arrested with more than RM100 million in their possession. That Ismail keeps ending up in hospital whenever he is about to face the consequences of his actions should tell us something about why our country is in such a pathetic state. We are in such a pathetic and depressing state because the people who have risen to the very top of our system are clearly not winners. Ismail Sabri used to be the Prime Minister of our country. As Prime Minister, you would expect him to be an apex winner — someone who has competed, fought off opponents and overcome enormous obstacles to reach the highest position in the nation. But looking at how Ismail seems to become ill whenever he is confronted with a serious challenge, shouldn't it be obvious that this is far from a man who is accustomed to competing, overcoming adversity or winning? So if he is not used to competing or winning, how did he become Prime Minister in the first place? In the answer to that question, ladies and gentlemen, lies the answer to the question of what ails our nation. We have created a system that often rewards people who are good at being yes men and flattering rather than people who are good at competing, striving, struggling and yes, winning. Our system is the sort of system that only appreciates and values someone who crumbles at the first sign of serious pressure, by elevating them to the highest office in the land. This is why our country keeps crumbling whenever it faces pressure. When our system goes against the natural order by rewarding the weakest and most useless amongst us with the top positions, is it really surprising that the harder we work, the more energy we put in and the more effort we make to move the country forward, the further backwards we seem to be going?
