Settlements commonly followed valleys and waterways, while mountainsides served hunting and travel purposes. The river wasn’t born when engineers mapped it. The mountain wasn’t born when the Parkway crossed it. Niagara Dam was constructed in 1906 where the Roanoke River passes through a narrow mountain gorge. Historical documentation describes a roughly 530-foot-long, 60-foot-high dam, with four generators producing electricity. The National Park Service says the facility continues supplying power.
