Before Guns N’ Roses became one of the biggest rock bands in the world… they were playing a UCLA frat party. 🤘🌴🎸 On July 21, 1985, @gunsnroses performed at UCLA — an incredible snapshot of the band during its earliest days in Los Angeles, long before Appetite for Destruction, “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” sold-out arenas, MTV domination, and global superstardom. And yes: they played “Welcome to the Jungle.” At the time, Guns N’ Roses was still a brand-new band emerging from the chaotic 1980s Los Angeles rock scene. The classic lineup hadn’t yet fully solidified, and the group was playing clubs, parties, and small venues while building a following around Hollywood and the Sunset Strip. This was the Los Angeles music world that produced them: The Troubadour, Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy, the Rainbow, Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood clubs, rehearsal rooms, apartments, house parties, flyers stapled to telephone poles, and musicians seemingly everywhere. The polished mythology came later. In 1985, they were still becoming Guns N’ Roses. Just two years after these photos were taken, the band released Appetite for Destruction in 1987. The album would eventually become one of the best-selling debut albums in rock history, driven by songs including “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” Which makes seeing “Welcome to the Jungle” performed in this setting especially wild. Before it was blasting from radios and MTV… Before the music video… Before millions of records… Before stadiums around the world… It was being played at a frat party in Westwood. 🤯 That’s one of my favorite things about digging through Los Angeles music history: so many artists who eventually became global icons were once playing tiny clubs, backyard parties, college events, and half-filled rooms around LA. You just had to be there before everyone else knew. These photographs were taken by @marccanter_recklessroad_gnr, whose extraordinary documentation of the band’s early years preserved an intimate record of Guns N’ Roses before fame changed everything. If you love Guns N’ Roses history, Welcome to the Jungle, 1980s Los Angeles, Sunset Strip history, LA rock history, UCLA history, Westwood, Hollywood music history, vintage Los Angeles, 1980s rock, Sunset Boulevard, Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy, Troubadour, old Hollywood nightlife, archival concert photography, or the early days of famous bands, save this one. 🎸🌴 Imagine casually going to a UCLA party in 1985 and realizing years later you watched one of the biggest rock bands in history before the rest of the world knew their name. Would you have known they were going to be huge? 👀 📍 UCLA · Westwood, Los Angeles 🗓 July 21, 1985 🎸 @gunsnroses performing “Welcome to the Jungle” 📸 Photos by @marccanter_recklessroad_gnr 🌴📍🔍Want to explore LA’s hidden history in real life?
