Aloha Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea! Today we honor Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day, commemorating the return of Hawaiian independence in 1843. It’s a time to reflect on the strength of cultural pride, identity, and the enduring spirit of resilience that continues to thrive through traditions like ocean voyaging. Throughout July, we’ve celebrated Hōkūleʻa’s 50th anniversary and her ongoing Moananuiākea Voyage. This week, we close out our waʻa-inspired highlights with the final artwork of the month: “Vaka Touua of the Marquesas Islands” by Herbert Kawainui Kāne. 🌊 Vaka Touua of the Marquesas Islands by Herbert Kawainui Kāne oil painting, 1972 The elaborate surface decoration of the end pieces and gunwale strakes are typical of Marquesan wood artifacts and sculpture. At the bows are bird heads with human faces. Figures are carved in the bow and stern, where human skulls have been displayed in some canoes. Tthe entire canoe body resembles a bird in profile. The leaders of the canoe are shown in the bows, one wearing a feather cape and another carrying a club. Most of the men wear whale ivory ear ornaments and some wear headbands and mantels of turtle shell, pearl shell, and sennit. Herb Kawainui Kāne (1928 – 2011) was born in Paynesville, Minnesota and raised in Waipio Valley, Hawai‘i. He was an artist and historian with a passionate interest in early Polynesian voyages. His paintings and book ""Voyage"" inspired the formation of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, the building of the Hōkūleʻa canoe, and its subsequent journey to Tahiti. Kāne participated in the design and building of the Hōkūleʻa, and was a consultant in Hawai‘i and the South Pacific to the National Geographic Society.
