No. A house built in 1986 is NOT a period mid-century modern home. That term generally refers to design from around the 1930s through the mid-1960s. A 1986 house cld borrow the style, but its build date doesn’t make it mid-century.

You’re going to regret not putting in more recess lighting it’ll be cheaper and easier to do it now, than if you decide later on that you actually needed the light.. I have a room that has large windows that let in a lot of light. The windows face the north. I get a lot of light in this room during the day. So I did not add extra recess lighting, and let me tell you at night. I really really regret it.

Maybe consider a long short window at the top of the new wall created in the dining room. It would allow natural light into that room from the new pantry

Maybe keep the recessed light in the center of that ceiling section and make it a directional light towards the stone fireplace wall?

I wouldn’t get rid of the canned lights. on Amazon They sell these canned lights that have a nightlight built-in so you just switch your light switch on and off and on the second switch it turns over to nightlight and it’s really good mood lighting in the evenings.

I just bought my first home - and it hasn’t been aesthetically renovated since it was built in 1984. I love seeing someone else preserving so much of the beauty of these MCM homes!
