We can call him a thief, a liar, a failure or whatever political names people want to use. That is politics. Leaders must be questioned and held accountable. But criticism should not make us blind to development. Marape has become the first Prime Minister to travel through this newly built road, reaching communities that have been isolated for generations. You can hate the politician, but you cannot pretend the road does not exist. While travelling through the area, we saw people from remote villages wearing traditional malo and traditional clothing, coming out to see the Prime Minister and the delegation. For some of these communities, seeing a convoy of vehicles travelling through their area and seeing a Prime Minister physically come to them was something they never expected to experience. People were crying, celebrating and thanking the delegation. These are not people sitting in Port Moresby arguing on Facebook. These are people who have lived far away from proper roads and basic services for most of their lives.That is the uncomfortable truth about development in Papua New Guinea. For someone in Port Moresby, a new road might just be another government project. For someone in a remote village, that road can completely change their life. It can mean easier access to hospitals, schools, markets, transport and opportunities. Many people in these communities were born in isolation and could have died in isolation without ever seeing serious development reach their doorstep. So yes, criticise James Marape when he deserves criticism. Demand accountability when public money is involved. But also give credit where work has actually reached ordinary people. For what this road means to those communities, I salute the Prime Minister.
