We're so caught up in everyday life that we forget we're all moving towards the same destination. And that is our graves. The bitter reality is that one day, someone else will live in your house. Someone else will drive your car. The things you've spent years accumulating will belong to somebody else. And eventually, even the people who remember you will be gone. It's a difficult thought, but I find it quite freeing. Because it reminds me that I don't need to spend my life trying to impress people. I don't need to win every argument. I don't need everybody to agree with me or understand my decisions. What I do need is to be conscious of the life I'm living and what I'm preparing to take with me when I return to Allah. My salah. My character. How I treated my family. The good I did for others. The things I did sincerely when nobody was watching. Because those are the things that will matter when everything else is left behind. And remembering death isn't supposed to make us miserable or stop us enjoying the blessings Allah has given us. It's supposed to help us put things into perspective. To appreciate the people we love whilst they're still here. To forgive where we can. To stop wasting time on things that don't deserve it. And to live with more intention. One day, this life will be over. Make sure you haven't spent it chasing the approval of people you'll eventually leave behind. May Allah help us spend our time on what truly matters and grant us a good ending. Ameen.
