He lowkey Mogging🗿 During the 1st century CE, Babylonia formed part of the vast Parthian Empire, ruled by the Arsacid dynasty. Within this region lived a large and long-established Jewish population. According to the historian Josephus, two Jewish brothers from Nehardea, Asinaeus and Anilaeus, rose from relatively humble origins to become the leaders of a powerful armed following in the countryside of Babylonia. Their growing influence eventually attracted the attention of the Parthian authorities. After an early attempt to suppress the brothers failed, the Parthian king Artabanus II chose accommodation instead. Josephus states that Artabanus recognized their authority in parts of Babylonia, apparently hoping that they could help maintain stability while the king dealt with other political challenges. For roughly fifteen years, the brothers remained influential. Eventually Asinaeus died, leaving Anilaeus in command. The situation changed dramatically when Anilaeus began raiding territories belonging to Mithridates, an important Parthian nobleman and son-in-law of King Artabanus II. Mithridates gathered cavalry and moved against him. Their first confrontation ended in a victory for Anilaeus. His forces launched a surprise attack, defeated Mithridates' troops and took Mithridates himself prisoner. Anilaeus ultimately released him, partly because of the possible consequences of harming a member of the Parthian royal family. Mithridates soon returned with a considerably larger force. Anilaeus marched out to confront him, but his army crossed approximately ninety stadia of dry terrain during the hottest part of the day. Josephus describes the troops as exhausted and suffering severely from thirst when the fresh Parthian force appeared. Mithridates attacked and won a decisive victory. Anilaeus escaped with some of his remaining followers, while Josephus describes the losses among his forces as extraordinarily heavy, using the expression “many tens of thousands.” No reliable precise casualty figure is provided, and the scale reported by an ancient author should therefore be treated cautiously. Anilaeus later gathered another following and continued operating in Babylonia. Eventually local Babylonians discovered the location of his camp and launched a surprise attack in which Anilaeus and his remaining band were defeated. His death brought the period of power established by the two brothers to an end. The consequences extended beyond Anilaeus himself. Josephus reports that tensions subsequently increased between Babylonian and Jewish communities. Many Jews eventually left for Seleucia on the Tigris, one of Mesopotamia's greatest cities and an important urban centre within the Parthian realm. Seleucia contained several major communities, particularly Greeks and Syrians, alongside the newly arrived Jewish population. Josephus describes political and communal disputes developing among these groups. At first, Jewish residents became involved on the Syrian side of a dispute against the Greeks. Eventually, however, leading Greeks and Syrians reconciled with one another, leaving the Jewish community increasingly isolated. Josephus then records a catastrophic confrontation in Seleucia in which the united Greek and Syrian population attacked the city's Jewish community. He reports that more than 50,000 Jews died and that only a relatively small number escaped with assistance from friends or neighbours. Those who survived fled toward Ctesiphon and later other important Jewish centres including Nehardea and Nisibis. These events should not be understood simply as a conventional “Parthian–Jewish war.” Anilaeus commanded an autonomous Jewish armed following inside Parthian-controlled Babylonia, while Mithridates was a powerful Parthian nobleman. Likewise, the later Seleucia conflict was primarily between communities living inside a city under Parthian sovereignty rather than a campaign ordered by the Parthian king.
