#infocus | Henri Matisse Over the course of his life, the French artist Henri Matisse made over 800 prints in a range of different mediums, including linocut, lithograph, etching, and aquatint. The distinctness of each medium in its process, materials, and presentation of visual qualities allowed Matisse to closely examine linework in several perspectives. While Matisse made a reputation for himself as a painter through his stark and vivid use of colour, he refrained from any in his prints, which presented compositions only in black-and-white. The stripped nature of printmaking appealed greatly to Matisse—he saw it as a way to test himself on what he could do with only the most basic artistic means at his disposal. Each line comes as a result of pressure prescribed by the artist’s own hand. With observation a key component to his print compositions, Matisse would also sit with his subjects for hours, studying their face until satisfied with his ability to render them in the most basic form. Through his prints, Matisse makes clear the dedication he feels toward artistic creation. Despite how simple and flat they might seem, he worked tirelessly, vigorously, and continuously to complete them. Three of Matisse’s prints are currently on view as part of our Summer Show. Come visit us at Bernard Jacobson Gallery, 8 Golden Square, Images: Henri Matisse, Fanny de face (1914), Etching on Chine appliqué on wove paper, edition of 15. Henri Matisse, Le renard blanc (1929), Lithograph on Arches Velin paper, edition of 75. Henri Matisse, Nadia au regard attentif (1948), Aquatint on Marais wove paper, edition of 25. #artgallery #gallery #henrimatisse #matisse #prints #printmaking #exhibition #newexhibition #london #soho #bernardjacobsongallery #bernardjacobson
