Pier 39 is one of San Francisco’s most famous waterfront attractions, but it is actually a fairly modern addition to the city. It opened on October 4, 1978, after businessman and developer Warren Simmons transformed an old cargo pier along the Embarcadero into a festival-style marketplace filled with shops, restaurants, entertainment, and views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. The pier became a major tourist destination, but its most famous residents arrived unexpectedly. After the Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989, California sea lions began gathering on Pier 39’s K-Dock, and by January 1990 their numbers had exploded into the hundreds. Scientists cannot say the earthquake itself caused them to move in; a more likely explanation is that the floating docks provided the sea lions with a safe resting place close to abundant food in San Francisco Bay, while keeping them away from many land predators. Their arrival created a problem because the docks were supposed to be used by boats, and attempts were made to discourage the animals from staying, but the sea lions kept returning. Eventually, after consultation with marine experts, the marina largely surrendered K-Dock to them. What started as an unwanted invasion became one of Pier 39’s biggest attractions, with crowds coming specifically to watch the animals bark, fight over dock space, sleep in giant piles, and occasionally disappear when they follow food elsewhere along the California coast.
