In rescue, a lot of us roll our eyes when people say they only want a puppy over an older dog. Not because puppies don’t deserve homes, but because so many people want a puppy without wanting actual puppy behavior. They want the cute phase, but not the chewing, the accidents, the training, the energy, or the patience it takes to raise a dog correctly. Meanwhile, rescue is drowning in older dogs that were once those same puppies. Dogs who are now heartworm positive because prevention was never given. Dogs facing behavior issues after being beaten, abandoned, or never socialized properly. Dogs who grew up confused, untrained, or discarded the second they became “too much.” And the cycle just keeps repeating. I wish every puppy could be set up for success from the beginning, but that only happens when people are honest with themselves before adopting. Ask yourself: do I truly have the time, patience, and financial ability to raise this dog through every stage of its life? If they chew furniture, have accidents, bark too much, or jump on the baby, will you take the proper steps to work those things out? If no, don’t adopt a puppy. Puppies grow up. And the decisions made during that puppy stage often decide whether they end up loved for life or sitting in a shelter kennel later on. And PLEASE if you’re the person saying to yourself I want to breed my dog because I want to keep one of their puppies, just stop 😭 puppies are being euthanized EVERYDAY because of that foolishness.
