I don't know about all agencies, but I had to sign things saying that we are ok with providing meals, transportation to required places, and including them in family life. So I guess I didn't have to take them to social events, but I did. I loved taking my girls to see their friends or to shop for things they needed. But I also enjoyed them and loved spending time with them. In fact, last week I had a video call with my girl that left in 2024 to go back to Italy. We like to catch up and see what's going on in each other's lives. I do know I was lucky though in hosting two amazing and wonderful girls. I had a neighbor who wasn't so lucky and once hosted girls who trashed her house and refused to clean up after themselves or participate in any household chores. They treated the experience like a vacation and not as a family experience.

my brother's exchange student made the varsity soccer team.. guess what the whole damn family went to every game, because he is FAMILY.. of my bro or sil were at work aunty and Grandma and Grandpa stepped up.. these kids are thousands of miles away from their family and I can't imagine how scary that could be. if you didn't want to welcome them like family don't get involved in the program

And she is very correct within the CONTEXT. Sometimes we as host parents have adult plans and we’re walking out the door and they ask for a ride. Or we’re at work and they want a ride somewhere. These things can’t always happen! Some students just are not used to both parents working AND not being able to hop on public transport to meet their friends. It’s a very very common problem in exchange programs that host parents feel bad due to teens asking for rides last minute excessively. (Key word excessively). Most students have friends who drive by month 3. If you’re a host parent/exchange student you understand exactly what she means. It’s not we’re not giving you a ride, its please don’t assume a ride every time. You can’t bank on host parents stepping in every time. Emergencies always I’m coming. But if you want to go to Walmart or whatever right after school at 3… you need to ask a friend
